Discover the Dos and Don’ts of a Kitchen Remodel Project

iStock_000028301402_SmallWondering what separates a wonderful kitchen from a dull, lifeless, uninspiring one? Your creative vision is the element that makes all the difference in the world. While you should definitely feel encouraged to get creative and customize your indoor space as you see fit, you should realize that there are certain dos and don’ts that you should factor in before making any radical changes.

Let’s start with the things that you should try to avoid while upgrading your kitchen.

  • Don’t Be Boring. Does your room sing? What kind of message does your indoor space actually send? Throughout your remodel project, you don’t have to replace all your furniture, repaint the walls and change the flooring to achieve great end results. Instead, try to think outside the box and add a surprise element that will become the focal point of the entire room. In this case, we could be talking about a vintage colorful fridge, a hand-painted cabinet with intriguing motifs or a nice contrast created by your flooring, walls, cabinets, countertops and backsplash, accentuated by a smart lighting solution. The possibilities are endless; you just have to bet everything on a distinctive wow factor that will individualize your space.
  • Don’t Overdo It. Don’t be boring, but don’t spend a fortune on something that may be cataloged as a kitchen remodel overkill. Stick to one unitary style and add furniture pieces and appliances that actually make sense together. An eclectic style is usually difficult to achieve, especially when you are not familiar with the unspoken rules of interior design. At the end of the day, remember that simplicity with a twist is your key to rethinking your rooms in a delightful manner.
  • Don’t Be Cheap (Especially When It Comes to Buying New Custom Cabinets). Instead of buying inexpensive new cabinets that you can find literally everywhere, choose to go with original designs tailored to your requirements, in terms of size, hardware choice, color, materials and details. Custom cabinets that are durable, solid and personalized to your liking are smart long-term investments that you will not feel the need to question after a couple of years.

Now that you know what type of mishaps you should avoid while redoing your kitchen, here are a few basic suggestions that you may want to follow to achieve remodel perfection.

Install Tall Cabinets Reaching the Ceiling. Generally speaking, short-base cabinets are not the best idea simply because they offer limited storage solutions. On top of that, they stimulate your inner hoarder and encourage you to collect and deposit unwanted accessories; plus these pieces tend to gather a lot of dust. On the other hand, cabinets reaching the ceiling are a much more elegant option enabling you to save space and store your belongings wisely.

Rely on Custom Cabinets to Mask Your Appliances. Unless your fridge or stove represents your kitchen’s piece of resistance, do you best to design custom cabinets that could easily mask these giant appliances (called “stainless steel coffins” by some interior designers) and make your kitchen resemble an inviting lounge area.

Turn an odd corner into a reading space by adding a small sofa and a small bookrack, or install a mini bar and matching barstools to create the perfect hangout spot in the heart of your kitchen. Go with your gut and follow the most important rule of any successful kitchen remodel project: “Be creative!”
